Brenda Blunt

Brenda A. Blunt has over 30 years of experience providing services to tax-exempt entities, closely-held business and their stakeholders. She provides income tax compliance and planning for individuals, corporations, partnerships and tax-exempt entities and represents clients before the Internal Revenue Service and state taxation authorities. Tax-exempts and their related entities comprise approximately 90% of her clients. She helps these clients, in particular, comply with and plan for sales, payroll and property taxes; consults with them regarding the tax and accounting impact of multiple-entity structures; helps with international tax issues; works with them to establish or reinstate their status as tax-exempt and helps them plan for the tax aspects of unrelated business income and executive retirement. Blunt is a frequent teacher nationally, locally and at the organization level on topics that include health care reform, board responsibilities, tax compliance, strategic planning, and financial management principles for nonprofits. Blunt currently represents almost 200 nonprofit organizations ranging in size from formation-stage organizations to multi-million organizations with international reach. Her client base includes public charities, private foundations, trade associations, social welfare organizations, cooperatives and unions. She is passionate about working with organizations in the nonprofit sector, in no small part because of their passion to make the world she lives in a better place.

Kendis Muscheid

Muscheid’s practice focuses on the representation of nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations, and donors making charitable gifts, assisting in all aspects of tax, corporate and regulatory matters. Her clients include a variety of 501(c)(3) and other tax-exempt organizations, such as private foundations, supporting organizations, universities, and research institutions, religious entities, museums, social welfare organizations, trade associations, and groups dedicated to the arts.

Muscheid advises clients on the qualifications for tax exemption, conversions to and from tax-exempt status, obtaining and maintaining favorable tax treatment, reporting and government filings, and organizations’ creation and operation of supporting organizations or related foundations. She also counsels organizations about nonprofit governance, advocacy issues, unrelated business income tax, endowment creation and management, restructuring multi-tier entities, solicitation registration, mergers, and acquisitions.

Muscheid represents clients during IRS audits and appeals processes and was named in Best Lawyers in America, Nonprofit/Charities Law and Tax Law (2005-2024); voted Best Lawyers, “Lawyer of the Year” Non-Profit/Charities in 2014 and 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona; was the 2016 recipient of the Arizona Foundation for Women’s Marilyn R. Seymann Award for work in the nonprofit community.

Muscheid maintains the highest rating of “AV” in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory and frequently speaks on topics related to tax-exempt organizations.

Allan is a key member of the not-for-profit and commercial real estate industry practice groups. He spends a substantial portion of his time serving not-for-profit organizations. Sarah Zelhart

Sarah Zelhart, CPA, CGMA, has served for more than 20 years in both corporate and not-for-profit environments. She currently serves as Director of Chapter Financial Support and Compliance for Make-A-Wish America supporting the 60 chapters nation-wide. Within these roles she has concentrated on internal controls, process improvement, mergers and acquisitions. With a continuing eye to determining and implementing best practices, she has dedicated her professional life to creating environments with transparent operations and strong governance. She volunteers with the Valley of the Sun United Way, as a Wish Granter and the Steering Committee for the Not for Profit Section of the ASCPA.

Deanna Peterson

Deanna Peterson, CPA, joined YPTC in 2019, where she leads the Phoenix market and serves clients in Arizona and New Mexico. Before leading the market, Deanna spent two years as a Client Manager and about one year as an Associate at the firm. Deanna earned both Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Master of Professional Accounting Degrees from the University of Washington. She has over 20 years of accounting experience from a blend of Big 4 Accounting, nonprofit controllership, and nonprofit accounting consulting capacities. - Form 990 Schedule A (Public Support) and Schedule R (Related Entities) and Why They Matter

Amy O'Loughlin

Amy O’Loughlin is a director in the Phoenix office and has significant experience working with approximately 200 tax-exempt organizations on IRS compliance, multi-state issues, establishing tax-exempt status, and income, sales and payroll tax issues unique to tax-exempt clients. She sits on the CBIZ not-for-profit practice group steering and technical committees and has conducted training on a variety of not-for-profit topics for both internal and external audiences. Amy spends the majority of her time providing consulting and compliance services for tax-exempt filers. Internally, Amy is an active member of the CBIZ Women’s Advantage (CWA) Task Force and serves as a mentor for new tax associates.

Learn the purpose of the disclosures in Schedule A and Schedule R. At the end of the session, you will be able to recognize an organization’s public charity status and computer its public support test. Brittney Williams

Brittney Williams, CPA, CGFM is a Partner for the public accounting firm HeinfeldMeech where she is involved with developing and monitoring the Quality Control policies and procedures for the firm. She currently manages audit services for municipalities, school districts, transportation authorities and non-profits out of their Phoenix office. Brittney speaks frequently for HeinfeldMeech, several State CPA societies and AICPA Conferences on topics including GASB pronouncements, auditing standards, Government Auditing Standards and Single Audits. She has worked in the single audit environment for 18 years and has assisted clients and other professionals with single audit implementation matters. Brittney is also a peer reviewer of firms enrolled in the AICPA Peer Review Program and is currently serving on the AGA Financial Management Standards Board and the AICPA Technical Issues Committee.

Single Audits continue to be increasingly complex and challenging for auditees and auditors. This session will aim to educate attendees on what is needed to stay compliant in today’s single audit environment.

- Inflation Reduction Act Tax Credits: Lessons Learned From Projection

While the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA or Act) is the largest energy incentive legislative effort in U.S. history and provides unique yet complex opportunities for nonprofits, tax exempt organizations are still navigating through the complexities and nuances of the legislation. Two years after passage, there are many lessons learned and insights gained from experiences with energy project development, compliance with prevailing wage & apprenticeship, domestic content and other requirements of the Act plus our efforts with the IRS pre-filing registration portal and tax credit filings.

  • Understand the Inflation Reduction Act and tax credit opportunities available to tax exempt organizations.
  • Gain a deeper appreciation of the complexities of the Inflation Reduction Act and how your organization may realize the benefits and minimize the risks of the legislation.
  • While the session will provide insight on how other others are approaching Inflation Reduction Act compliance, ample time will be allowed for audience participants to share their own experiences and ask questions during this interactive session.

Bart is a Director in CLA’s Business Opportunity Assessment group and leads the System Selection practice. Nate Allphin

Nate has 20 years of experience in the data and analytics world. His career started as a data analyst, and he quickly came to realize that organizing and enabling companies with data was his true passion.

After various stints at startup companies during his early career, he met his eventual business partner, Nathan McMurtrery, and they founded data warehousing and consulting company Xerva in 2014. Xerva was focused on helping companies that felt they were buried in data chaos. Their passion for organizing data and making it actionable, accessible, and accurate has served them well. In 2019, Xerva was acquired by Eide Bailly to help enhance the offering they could provide to the many clients that Eide Bailly serves. Nate has a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems from Brigham Young University.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, gardening, fly-fishing and almost any outdoor activity.

Lisa Lumbard

Lisa B. Lumbard, CPA, CGFM, not-for-profit consultant and leadership trainer, founded Lumbard Consulting, LLC in 2018 to share with community impact leaders what she learned in over 35 years of working with boards and management while providing not-for-profit organizations and local governments with financial and program compliance audit services.
